Our Story
Our family moved to the farm in 2020. Brian and I had this dream of owning a farm in retirement, a second career of sorts. When the world shut down and we were forced to look at ourselves and our motivations we asked ourselves why we were waiting to do the thing we felt we were meant to. And so we literally threw out every plan we had made for the next 10 years and started over. It turned a lot of heads, we lost some things but what we've gained for ourselves, our faith and our family is immeasurable.
Brian got laid off from his job of 15 years just a few short months after we moved to the farm and we were tempted to think that maybe we made a mistake. Instead, we dug deeper and dreamed even bigger and prayed even more and sweat a lot, and began stewarding this farm in some pretty big ways- we are now selling, meat, eggs, veggies and flowers. The dream is real and better than we could have ever thought up ourselves.
Recently Brian went back to work off of the farm and I am here managing it for both of us. Our dream is to get to the point where Brian can quit his off the farm job, I can then work part time using my degree and we can farm together happily ever after. This is our new 5 year plan.
Our Practices
Every animal at Your Friend's Farm is chosen with care — for our land, and for you. Our Katahdin sheep are a hair breed, which means no shearing and no need for docked tails, so you'll notice their coats and cute tails look a little different than the sheep in your mind's eye. They come in all colors, too; right now our flock includes a white ewe, a spotted ewe, white lambs, and a brown lamb. Our Kunekune pigs, registered pair Jon and June, are the newest additions, with their first litter of piglets expected this fall. We chose Kunekunes for their famously gentle, laid-back spirit — kind-spirited animals are important to us, so we can safely care for them and safely share them with you (you'll often find us scratching them behind the ears).
Their snout shape means they don't root, making them a perfect fit for our rotational pasture method. They're primarily grass fed, supplemented with local fruits and veggies and a non-GMO, soy-free, corn-free feed from Natural Farm Feed here in Spokane.
